"The Shenandoah Chapter has embarked on a very aggressive project
to construct a Memorial Garden to honor the victims and survivors of April 16th, 2007. This Garden, which will be approximately
8,000 sq. ft., is being constructed in Stephens City, Virginia, which is just south of Winchester, and will be located at
Sherando Park, which is operated by Frederick County Parks & Recreation Department. Once the project is completed,
Frederick County has agreed to fully maintain the Garden in perpetuity.
Our Chapter has worked very closely
with the Alumni Association in Blacksburg since this concept first emerged, and they have helped us tremendously in assuring
that this Garden is done in an appropriate and professional manner. We feel that this Garden will be something that
all Hokies will be proud of.
I have attached a colored artist rendering of the Garden to give you a better
idea of the scope of this project. As you will see, it includes a "VT" shaped sidewalk which has been thru-colored
and stamped to look like limestone, very extensive landscaping, 2 meditation benches which have been powdercoated maroon,
and a 35' (lighted) flagpole with a "memorial ring" around it containing (32) pieces of cut limestone.
In lieu of the gazebo, we opted to purchase a 14' x 14' solid cedar pergola which will have engraved pavers on the
floor recognizing the many friends and business associates whose monetary contributions are making this project possible.
There will also be a large, solid bronze plaque attached to a large limestone boulder, which will set at the bottom of the
"V". This plaque includes a raised image of Burress Hall, the University Seal, and the names of the victims.
The total cost of this project, less in-kind contributions, is estimated at approximately $30-$35,000.
The
Garden will be completed and ready for dedication on April 16th of this year. We will be having a public dedication
service to formally present this lasting and living memorial to the community, in honor of those that so needlessly perished
nearly 2 years ago. This dedication service will follow our 2nd Annual Red Cross Memorial Blood Drive.
I would like to ask you and other fellow Hokies to consider making either a monetary contribution toward the construction
of this Garden, or to purchase an engraved paver for on the floor of the pergola. Many of the pavers are already on
order, and we continue to order them on a weekly basis. (Pavers will also be available for purchase after the dedication
of the garden has been made.)
Thank You in advance for ANY consideration you can give this request.
Your support would be greatly appreciated by all who have helped make this very ambitious project a reality. If you have any
questions, please do not hesitate calling me at (540) 667-2256 after 6:00 p.m. or by emailing me at the address above."
